About Liminal Spaces: Liminal Spaces is an autobiographical social commentary on influences on identity formation. Harrington use toys, games, educational tools, and pop culture icons from his formative years in this work. Through imagery and text, Harrington shares a cultural narrative that was absent during his upbringing. By incorporating familiar materials and symbols, he invites viewers into what initially feels like a nostalgic or recognizable world—only to subvert their expectations and challenge their assumptions. The work reveals the coexistence of two parallel worlds: one visible and mainstream, the other hidden—much like the artist’s own experience growing up. Rich continues to explore the different stages of a gay man’s life, using humor, emotional honesty, and a search for belonging to connect with viewers on a deeper human level.

About the artist: Born in Binghamton, New York in 1958, Rich Harrington holds a BFA in Illustration from Syracuse University (1980) and an MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (1993). He also studied in London from 1978–1979 with the partners of Pentagram Design Ltd. and faculty from St. Martin’s College of Art and Design. His work is held in private and corporate collections across the U.S. Harrington has received numerous awards, including the 2016 NYSCA Finishing Funds Grant, a 2016 Creative Capital Professional Development Grant, the 2004 Saltonstall Foundation Individual Artist Grant, and a 2002 NYSCA Decentralization Grant. A dedicated educator, he has taught for over 20 years at SUNY Broome Community College, where he received the 2019 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching. He teaches both foundational and advanced courses in art and design.
