Drink Beer | Talk History!

Join the Phelps Mansion Museum in both learning history and drinking beer on October 21st. Local historian, E.J. Murphy, hosts a presentation detailing one man’s life during the American Civil War.

The Phelps Mansion Museum presents: the return of History Happy Hour!

Thursday, Oct. 21st 7-9PM

Drink beer and talk history during the Phelps Museums’ History Happy Hour. This month we are featuring E.J. Murphy, who will present “‘The Rugged Stock of a Passing Generation’ – Sherlock Foster Black’s Long Civil War.”

Sherlock Foster Black was born in Chenango in 1844 and rose to prominence as one of the Parlor City’s societal stalwarts in the years after the Civil War. Black enlisted in the 27th New York Infantry regiment at the outbreak of the war and saw action in some of the deadliest battles early in the conflict. After the regiment mustered out of service, Black would lend his services to the 14th New York Heavy Artillery regiment. During his time with the 14th , Black found himself in enemy captivity. The experiences that Black endured stuck with him for life and helped shape the man that would later become one of Binghamton’s longest serving law enforcement officers.

E.J. Murphy is an educator and public historian from Scranton, PA. He is the Project Coordinator for the Waverly Community House’s “Destination Freedom: Underground Railroad Walking Tour of Waverly” program and teaches social studies at the Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligence Charter School in Scranton.
